Script by Michelle Roche and Nick Young
Directed by Nick Young and Michelle Roche
Produced by Katie Dunn
Musical direction by Sarah Joy Pearson
Designed by the artists of Stokes Croft, Bristol
We welcome you to Stokes Croft, 1836.
(We love you.)
We welcome you to the St James Fair.
(We lied.)
A large scale site responsive promenade performance based on historical events in the area of Stokes Croft, Bristol. Based in an old disused showroom, the show had audiences of over 1800 and brought 112 artists, performers and volunteers local to Stokes Croft together to collaborate on this ambitious project. The story, drawn from newspapers archives of the time, tells the story of a band of travelling performers who are torn apart through infidelity, jealousy and ultimately murder. These events contributed to the eventual shutting down by governmental decree of the St James' Fair which had run for more than three centuries.
"Ambitious and imaginative work...genuinely thrilling." - Lyn Gardner, Guardian
